Portio Research forecasts that:

–       there will be 6.5 billion mobile subscribers worldwide by end-2012

–       the worldwide mobile subscriber base will now grow at a CAGR of 7.3 percent between 2011 and 2016, to near 8.5 billion by end-2016

–       worldwide annual handset shipments will exceed 1.67 billion at end-2012, 125 million more than that in 2011

–       worldwide annual handset shipments will reach 2.15 billion by end-2016

–       smartphone shipments in 2012 will account for almost 40 percent of total worldwide handset shipments

–       smartphones will account for the majority of worldwide handset shipments by end-2016

–       mobile services generated over USD 1.3 trillion in revenues worldwide in 2011, and that this revenue is now expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.3 percent between 2011 and 2016, to hit nearly USD 1.8 trillion by end-2016

–       the worldwide mobile market will generate total service revenues of nearly eight trillion US dollars over the next five years

–       subscriber growth in the 2011-2016 period will be led by markets in Africa and Asia Pacific; with respective projected regional level CAGRs of 9.4 and 9 percent

–       the Top 10 markets by mobile subscriber additions (to 2016) will add 1,807 million subscribers over the next five year

–       the leading markets (by growth in subscriber numbers) are China (633.4 million), India, Indonesia, Brazil, Egypt, Pakistan, The US, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Iran (55.1 million additions

–       these same markets, measured as CAGR (2011-2016): Egypt leads (with 16.7 percent), followed by Oman, Sudan, Bangladesh, Mozambique, Iran, Pakistan, China, Uganda, and Nigeria (9.9 percent)

–       frustratingly, mobile ARPU is declining worldwide due to the increased acquisition of new users from low-value and rural segments, fierce price competition, and commoditisation of voice and messaging services

–      mobile equipment spend is expected to reach USD 56.3 billion at end-2012, recording a year-on-year growth rate of 3.6 percen

–       annual worldwide equipment will exceed USD 68 billion in 2016.
